MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 59

If it's Monday, it must be tme for another Mystery Jam. As usual, we will be playing for an MP3 download courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. The rules haven't changed: you need to correctly identify the song and the date to win. Post your guess in the comments. One guess per person per day (with the second “day” starting after I post the hint). The hint will come on Tuesday and the answer will be posted on Wednesday. Good luck...

Tuesday Hint: Phish has played 53 cities since their return to the stage on 3/6/09. This jam occurred in one of them.

Tuesday Hint #2: (For @benhatley). It's not "Theme."

Wednesday Answer: BLOG FTW!!!!!! Wait? Someone got it?!?! Damn it all to hell. This game sucks. In all seriousness, congratulations to @mainegabe for doggedly sniffing out the 9/24/99 "Wolfman's Brother." Nevertheless, the Blog will chalk this one up as a moral victory. See you all on Monday for the big Six-Oh...

Great choice.

markah This jam makes we wanna be like Mike!

I'll guess 7/26/99 Theme...although it sounds like an open-air venue vs. a shed.

Desert Sky '97 is a good guess, Forbin1. Especially with those Trey loopies.

, comment by ocelotvswilson
ocelotvswilson @ISleepLengthwise I agree. I think it is BEK Nov. 23 97. The only other could be TFTB but I don't think it would have been Merriweather 2011. The sound quality is a little off. Sems a tad older quality and '97 would be about right. Don't think it's Tweezer, it just doesn't have the correct time 4/4 beats the 2/2 that tweezer usually has. Gumbo 8-15-98 also hits it sound quality and timing wise. If I was submitting an entry, I would have to go with BEK 97 or Gumbo 98. Nice jam though.

wattznext Considering I've already guessed, I'll share my thinking here. Given the hint, either this jam is in the song Cities from 3.0 (though they haven't played the song 53 times in 3.0) or in a city they have played in 3.0, but the jam is likely from 1.0 or 2.0. And it's not Theme :)

NigelTufnel Oh yeah, first time through I thought it meant it was a 3.0 jam...but it could be any of the CITIES played in 3.0?

That doesn't really narrow it down!

wattznext I feel like the use of the term "cities' has to be a hint somehow. They could have said "venues" or something.
, comment by davey0110
davey0110 Well, Phish has played more venue than cities, so I don't think the two are interchangeable.

RabeldyNugs Holy shit, I run a little late to a mystery jam and there are all of a sudden 48 comments! At least it's still out there for anyone to grab...if I only had some free time now...
Good job blog for making another day2!

, comment by He_looks_too_much_like_Dave
He_looks_too_much_like_Dave I dont think "cities" is a play on word. The hint is clear that this jam occurred in one of the 53 cities Phish has played in 3.0.

I can definitely say that I have never heard this jam before.

I now think it's both. I think its a jam out of the song Cities. I think it occurred before 3.0, in a city they have played both before and during 3.0.
, comment by He_looks_too_much_like_Dave
He_looks_too_much_like_Dave In hindsight, my thought is that since they used "cities" instead of "venues", this is probably a 1.0 or 2.0 song in which they played in a different venue but same city as was played in 3.0. Thus, we need to figure all the venues they have played in 3.0 where they also played in the same city, different venue prior to 3.0.

(And I need to figure out what the heck song this is)

Wow! Nice man. I couldnt do my research but thought of a Wolfmans and maybe Sand and they played both at this show!! I was definetly thinking '99 and knew it wasn't summer!!! I love this game.
Good call blog & nice try w/ this good pick but you'll have to wait for next week.
, comment by MiguelSanchez
MiguelSanchez ah, thanks for the special "hint," just for me. i had a feeling it was not theme. more importantly, i knew i was wrong about an hour after guessing.

as for this 9/24/99 wolfman's, good call. the delay loop had me thinking, '99-'00. i'll have to pop that one in today. it's been SO long since i've listened to that show from start to finish. if i go to that one, i usually go straight to the sand> misty mtn hop combo.

congrats, mainegabe! job well done!

also, mystery jam folk, i think we can maybe chalk that one up in the win column. kudos, and good pick! as always, thanks for steering me toward a show i may not have popped in today! as much bad mouthing as i do about december '99, i freaking love that september/october tour. tons of good stuff in there...
, comment by gperk
gperk I too love this game and have been unsuccessful thus far. This time I went deep to retrieve this one. I went through numerous songs I thought would have that open air, 99 sound and even threw myself a few curves. I went from the 9.18.99 Boogie, 7.8.99 Fee, Cities from 8.10.97, 9.24.00, Zero from 11.26.97, the 12.16.99 & 6.24.00 Tweezers, the Meatstick and Melt from 7.15.99 and even listened to the "jam" track on phishows.com before deciding to give the 9.24.99 Wolfmans proper a spin and...found it. Phew. I used to have a cdr TAO (how awful those 2 second gaps were) of this show back in the dizzy and I'm so happy for the spreadsheet and the Mystery Jam Monday in this modern era. Any show with Peaches is worth listening all the way through. Thanks.

LOL! I still have all my tapes and probably will never give them up, never.

I think the blog would definetly have more wins under their belt but for me personally if I know the jam it's bc I knew them already from years of listening and not bc of searching for it. When I start searching I know that I'm most prob not gonna win bc there has got to be a phishhead who already knows it and loves phish as much as I do.
Life is good and phish helps...a lot.

BTW, give it up to the blog who made it for another Day2. Nice "moral" victory...
, comment by MiguelSanchez
MiguelSanchez ^yep, all my tapes are still stowed away up stairs. i usually keep about 10-15 in rotation down stairs. i too will never part with them!!

as for hunting down the mystery jam, i'm in the same boat. a couple weeks ago, i was certain we were dealing with a '99-'00 piper. i listened to about 15 pipers, got pissed, and quit! hunting usually equals doom...
