QUICK: WHAT ARE YOUR 10 FAVORITE JAMS?

Quick - in two minutes or less, name your ten favorite Phish jams.

Members of the Phish.net working group did just that over email. It's an interesting exercise - since you are answering quickly, you bring all of your subjective biases, feelings and reasoning specific to that particular moment in time to the table. Every single one of us who answered found ourselves in disbelief that we forgot about certain jams that others had on their lists. Many of us wanted to go back and change some of our votes, but for our purposes here I've held all of us to our initial lists. In other words, our individual lists came from the heart, rather than our heads - we tried to keep this as spontaneous as possible.

While the individual lists are very subjective and compiled without much conscious thought, in the aggregate the data coalesces into a very interesting list of some all time great Phish jams. Fifteen members of the working group submitted lists; 86 individual jams were named. Since we had no rules other than "favorite jams" some of the submissions included more than one song - the 12/31/95 Mike's Groove, for example. The jams mentioned spanned from 1992 to 2012, with the notable absences of any tunes from 1996, 2009 and 2010. Shown below is a graph charting total mentions of jams per year:

As you can see, 1997 has the most top jams, followed by 1995. I think we all could have predicted that. Personally I probably would have put 1998 (and possibly 1999) ahead of 1994, but the compiled data disagrees.

Note that the above graph is only counting each mention once; if we count multiple votes for the same jam a somewhat different picture emerges:

Here we see 1995 pulling ahead, indicating that there were more overlapping votes than in 1997 - in other words there were fewer total jams from 1995 that people put on their lists compared with 1997, but more of us agreed that the 1995 tunes were in the top ten.

I'm sure most of you are anxious by now to see the top jams we came up with. Before we get there, I want to reiterate the disclaimer about how this was done. A group of mostly 30-something and 40-something dudes who almost all started seeing Phish in the 90s wrote down their top ten jams, trying to be as spontaneous as possible. There are many many biases in this data. If your favorite jam isn't in this list, please don't fret, it isn't meant to be in any way definitive, just a compilation of a pretty fun little exercise. I can assure you, while all of these are great jams, Phish has easily played 10 times this number that on any given day could be called a top jam. So without further ado, here are the top ten jams (with ties) from the 2 minute favorite jam experiment:

First off - if there is a version here you haven't heard, stop what you are doing and listen - they are all amazing jams that will make your day a thousand times better if you are hearing them for the first time. And I promise you, this blog post is nowhere near as interesting as any one of these tunes.

As I was putting this together, I naturally assumed that 1.0 jams would dominate the list, and they do, but not more than one would expect give the increased number of shows Phish played in the 1990s. I was pleasantly surprised to see a 3.0 tune squeak into the top ten, and a great jam it is. And I want to reiterate, these were our spontaneous favorite jams, it is not a canonical list of the best jams. That said, when we saw the results most of us were pretty satisfied that we had a damn good top ten list.

The list does make one thing clear - for the group that voted, 1994-1998 (but not 1996!) was the golden age of Phish. Let's hope for another one starting with the New Year's run!

Edit: By (semi-)popular demand, here is the entire list of jams that received at least one vote.

If you liked this blog post, one way you could "like" it is to make a donation to The Mockingbird Foundation, the sponsor of Phish.net. Support music education for children, and you just might change the world.

officercookies Thanks for bringing me to this Rock and Roll, Need to look more into 3.0 gems, ever since Dick's been obsessed with a good 3.0 jam. Also, tried to do the exercise, far too stressful.

I was very surprised there was nothing from 96 (although I personally didn't pick anything from that year). With a bigger sample group, I'm sure we'd get a couple. The Clifford Ball DWD would be a good pick.

ColForbin Or the C&P with Karl Perazzo from 96, an all time great version.

bobramen It's awesome to see this list as a lot of the jams on there are some of my personal favorites as well. With that said, I think there should be some consideration of the younger generation of phans that have only experienced 3.0 and what they have to say about the jams from 3.0 exclusively.

Keep on sharin' in the groove, see yall on nye

guyforgetOPT The Online Phish Tour crew all picked out our top 50 and posted the results last week. Interesting how many differences there were -- e.g. Vegas Piper and Gorge Rock and Roll didn't get a single vote on OPT (neither did 11/30/94 II, but only because we tried to exclude set-long suites).

Likewise, the 5 jams that were unanimous top 50 picks by the OPTers (5/22/00 Ghost, 9/14/99 Bag, 8/13/93 Gin, 5/7/94 Tweezer, 2/28/03 Tweezer) got a grand total of 4 top 10 votes from phish.net.

All of which just goes to show that Phish's history offers such an incredible bounty of glorious jams that there is bound to be an equally diverse list of favorites among members of the fanbase. Lists like these only help bring more great music to more fans' ears, so I applaud the phish.net staff for putting it out there. Even if their picks weren't as good as ours :-P

Awesome, I love these kind of lists! Like I said in the post, this wasn't really an organized effort - we all tried to do it as spontaneously as possible. If we had gone to 50 I'd have no doubt that the jams you mentioned would have made it - but we also wouldn't have been able to do it in two minutes.

But to ignore the Vegas Piper is criminal. ;-)

andrewrose I'd actually love to see .net do a proper poll sampling ever user than wanted to submit a ballot... give people plenty of time to assemble their picks, like 50 of them, ranked. Then they could compile a Top 100 jams of all time. Make it an annual poll. Would make for such lively ongoing discussion and debate, and could be a great resourced for people looking to discover new stuff.

Could also set some ground rules, like, only one song/jam per entry (Tweezer-> Izabella isn't a jam, for example: it's two songs with jams, and a segue in between.. but the 12/6/97 Tweezer and 12/6/97 Izabella could both be eligible individually).

How about it admins? Might make for a nice 30th anniversary project...

mixthegrooves First post here on the Phish webs. Hello and good day to all! I've always just read but I've decided to start sharin' in the groove and post as well.

2 min or less my top ten favorite jams (in no particular order):

7.29.98 Gin
9.12.99 Gin
12.29.94 Bowie
2.28.03 Tweezer
8.26.12 Tweezer
4.2.98 Twist
5.16.95 Reba (which I'm jamming right now)
12.31.95 Weekapaug
10.30.98 Antelope
6.28.00 Gin

This was really hard. Like having to pick your favorite child. Still fun though! Some come just from what's been on rotation lately. If you ask me again it'd probably look different. Peace!

careful_w_that_axe_Miller Awesome list of jams created here.

I would be curious as to the background of the people who answered. Specifically: avg age, avg total shows per every year Phish has played.

Or the C&P with Karl Perazzo from 96, an all time great version.
Hell yeah! I was listening to this just yesterday. It would easily be in my personal top ten.
Something pre-92 ought to be mentioned at least once. Like the 10/12/90 Tweezer.
, comment by CooGarn
CooGarn How is the jam between Rock & Roll and Seven Below at IT (08/02/2003) always overlooked? It's so ridiculously good! Totally kills me that they cut it out on the DVD ;)

I'd actually love to see .net do a proper poll sampling ever user than wanted to submit a ballot... give people plenty of time to assemble their picks, like 50 of them, ranked.

I'd love to see us do this, I will pass it on to the rest of the admins. Would be an awesome 30th anniversary project.

FACTSAREUSELESS Late to the party as usual, but here goes. (didn't tecnically cheat on this, but I did take a bathroom break in the middle of writing, so I confess an unfair advantage on think time as to the rules of the engagement)

The__Van Why exactly is 1996 looked down upon? It is right between the 2 eras of 1.0, balls out rocking and the groove based funk that gave way to space. So why no love for 1996?
