MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 233

Welcome to the 233rd edition of Mystery Jam Monday. Continuing with our Hall of Fame Series, this week we welcome Emeritus champion @yunkfunk, who is the seventh of our ten seven-time MJM winners. Forced into early retirement last December, we hope @yunkfunk has been enjoying Mondays, now that he has all that free time on his hands. For our delight, he has thoughtfully selected this week's tracks and theme. Here goes:

To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the four mystery jam clips, and answer what they share in common. Each person gets one attempt per day, with the second “day” starting after the Blog posts the hint -- each answer should contain four songs / dates, along with the commonality between them. No sharing or trading of answers is allowed. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. The winner will receive one MP3 code good for a free download of any show, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. Good luck, and thanks again to @yunkfunk for hosting this seventh week of the MJM Hall of Fame Series.

Hint: R.I.P. - 1947 - 2016 (p.s. - you might want to start with the jam chart).

Answer: Congratulations to @12_29_97_4eva, who scored his second MJM win this week by correctly identifying the theme, David Bowie, and the four tracks, the versions from 7/25/03, 10/5/95, 2/3/91, and 11/17/94, respectively. Perhaps I spoiled @yunkfunk's likely Emeritus victory, by throwing in a blatantly obvious hint, but given the lack of responses after Day 1, it seemed as though people were struggling with this week's tough selections. Anyway thanks again to @yunkfunk for hosting and for coming up with a great theme. And congratulations to rising star @12_29_97_4eva.

Join us next week for MJM 234, as the Hall of Champions Emeritus Series rolls on, hosted by Emeritus Champion number eight, our very own regular MJM Host, @ucpete. Just back from European holiday, Pete is sure to have had some down time to stitch together an unbeatable MJM, thereby assuring the Blog of finally winning that elusive victory number 17 (out of 234 tries). See you next week!

JesusFreak I predict a win for the blog this week. I'm out.

thejajunker First, they're all David Bowies. And from different Eras. That's where things get tricky. Here are my date guesses.
7/25/03
8/16/15
8/8/93
12/11/95

I winged it on 3 of those. I feel confident about one.

seano while the hint is easy, it didn't make it any easier haha

12_29_97_4eva I've got 3 of 4 and I'm losing my mind thinking I may have already listened to the fourth and missed it.

12_29_97_4eva Thank God for the hint, because while I was in the right year for three of the clips, I was in the wrong song!

1) 7/25/03
2) 10/5/95 (clip is from the intro!)
3) 2/3/91
4) 11/17/94

I don't know what the unifying theme is other than they all come from the song named after the late, great David Bowie. They are from four different months in four different years, played in four different states.

dbertsch Nice Job! I had all but #3. I guess now I can stop listening to dissonant build-ups of the same song over and again.

I hear you. After an hour of listening to early 90s dissonance, I was ten minutes away from throwing in the towel. I need at least two days off from David Bowie.

Well done! Great work.

So I'm a little curious. Beyond the dead ringer of a hint, there was no angle on this one to narrow it down from the potential 450+ versions of the tune? I know there was ballparking it from era, but no secondary theme of venue, or date, or city.

Funny point about enduring an extended straight shot of early 90's dissonance. I would recommend throwing on the Carpenters Greatest Hits to decompress.

Cheers

You make a good point. These MJMs are needles in haystacks, especially without a unifying theme. For the first two clips, I guessed the year based on the band's sound (Trey's in the '03 clip and Mike's in the '95 clip, in particular) and narrowed it down from there. The '95 clip sounded like it was from an indoor show, so I started there and had it within a couple of minutes. The '94 clip I found in much the same way. But man, those early Bowies all sound similarly and going through a million of them from the early 90s nearly drove me insane.

Wasn't there once a People for a Louder Page movement? I'll sign up for a People for a Secondary Unifying Theme So MJM Doesn't Take Up My Whole Day movement. :)

Note: This isn't criticism of the members of the emeritus club (emereti?) who are putting the MJMs together. Kudos to them for making us work for our prize!

Piper72 Whatever you guys do for work that lets you listen to 450 different versions of Bowie...I want THAT job. :-)
, comment by DeliStyle
DeliStyle I was thinking 3 and 4 were 11/13/1991 and 4/24/1994 it had to do with Charlotte, NC area but it didn't seem right. Maybe because I just spent half the day listening to so many bowie's. By the way the Charlotte area has some juicy bowies in previous years

They must all have government jobs :) :) :)

vtspeedy I'm a government man. Said the man who isn't/wasn't David Bowie.

Congrats, @12_29_97_4eva! Sorry we sent you down the right path. :)

As the other Emeritus have shared, what a great honor to get to pick the selections this week. Huge props to @uctweezer and the others before him that spend the time to track down the jams, put them together (thanks, @Dog_Faced_Boy for your technical help), and wait patiently to have the Blog's dreams of a victory dashed. I have a new appreciation for what they do. And an appreciation for how fun it is!

So after @mcgrupp81 ruined my 3 Wilsons theme (still can't believe out of all the jams in all of Phishtory, we picked the same 12/8/92 Wilson jam!), I looked to the 11/17/94 Bowie. Those 2 Page runs are literally my favorite notes he has ever played! I had been sitting on the 10/5/95 intro (!!!) as a possible MJM someday and so the David Bowie theme was built...

It was only the day after my selections that I heard the news that Hara Arena is closing its doors after 60 years. ;)

Anyway, thank you everyone for playing along. Can't wait to hear what @uctweezer has cooked up for next week!

Piper72 Congrats 12_29!! Was nice to have my comment pheatured prominently in this thread as well. To my credit, I had the 7-25-03, just not the time to look up the rest. :-(
