MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 258

Welcome to the 258th edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the penultimate and second-hardest MJM of January. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the songs and dates of the three mystery clips – these clips are connected by a theme, but the theme needn't be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Answer: Congrats to @12_29_97_4eva who snags his fourth win by quickly identifying the 3/13/93 Wilson, the 9/27/00 Piper, and the 10/10/10 Ghost, all played in the state of Colorado. We now have ten active players across the halfway mark to Emeritus status, with ten more players already there – that's a whole shiver of sharks lying in wait! Next week, we'll get crazy with the hardest MJM of January – see you Monday morning?

The__Van Ah man I'm digging this week's jams

1st one sounds '95ish? 2nd is totally '99-'00. 3rd maybe 2010 or 2011??

TwiceBitten I am very surprised that I don't know what that 2nd jam is off the top of my head....cause that's my shit right there

Same. Would be shocked if it weren't 99.

PhreePhish Got the second and third fast, but that first one is killing me!
And I have to leave for a few hours in a bit.

#2 & 3 are right.
#1 has grand piano in it (= '94 or later).
Can anyone verify #1? I'm out and about and can't right now.

To be more specific, I'm out drinking the Revolution Brewing 'Deth's Tar' (say it fast) of imperial bourbon-aged stouts with my finance. Already spent a few hours on mystery jam and need a break!

Page did have his baby grand piano for Spring 93 tour. The 2/3 and 2/4 were decent opening shows as I remember them.

12_29_97_4eva I'm quite positive #1 is right, too.

Yup that sounds like it.
Don't know how I missed it (probably checking '94 and up, and certainly not a 'Wilson.' Checked lots of 'It's Ice' and 'Scent of a Mules.' Thought baby grand wasn't till Fall '94).
The guitar sound almost sounds acoustic in that first clip!
The second clip is one of my favorite sets ever and knew it right away.

Congrats!! Well done!!

Yep. I think I read it in an interview, but the sentiment is echoed in the "Loving Cup" song history as well -- Trey wanted to cover the tune for years but Page refused unless he could actually play it on piano:

"Phish broke the dusty drinking vessel out of its trophy case (2/3/93 Portland, ME) as the spring 1993 tour opening song. The timing of this debut apparently had hinged on the ability of the band to tour with a baby grand piano; 2/3/93 was in fact the first show with the baby grand in Page’s touring ensemble, and the opening lick of that year was thus on the baby grand."

Nice MJM this week. Good mix of tunes.

itsice88 Only one I knew right away was Fiddler's Green Piper. Once I heard that lick from Trey I instantly knew it. Such a distinct jam.
, comment by 12_29_97_4eva
12_29_97_4eva The effect Trey was using during the Fiddler's Green Piper was such a hallmark of his 2000 sound. I believe he was using the Octave Down setting on his Whammy II and quickly sweeping the footpedal up and down. Take a listen to the 6/29/00 Birds jam and you'll a lot of the same.

That Birds jam was the first one I checked!
