MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 432

Welcome to the 432nd edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the final and most difficult of August. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of all three mystery clips, which are connected by a theme. Each person gets one guess to start – if no one answers correctly in the first 24 hours, I'll post a hint. After the hint, everyone gets one more guess before Wednesday at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Hint: All three jams come from sets that start off the same way, but rapidly diverge after that.

Answer: Welp, at least he needed the hint this time? @Cactus_Mike pulled off another impressive win this week - back to back, three of four, and five of eleven now! - to crack this difficult trap-laden nut: 10/29/94 "Down with Disease," 10/29/13 "Down with Disease," and the totally not 10/29/XX "Down with Disease" but also D major jam from 7/8/03 "Harry Hood," all of which were played in second sets that opened with ... "Down with Disease." As mentioned in the comments, I try not to play dirty, but this week I did just that on freaking purpose and still lost. Monday, the difficulty drops several orders of magnitude - and remember: if you've won before, no answers on the blog before the hint! If it makes it that far...

This one's on me - both Pete and I have had hectic AM's, I offered to get the hint up for him and the embed link got lost in the fray.

The link is back up now, will re-embed later today.

impressive, even with the hint

I rarely play as dirty as I did this week - choosing two 10/29 jams, both DWD, both set-openers, and have the third jam be in same key (D major) but neither from 10/29, nor DWD, nor a set opener - but you got me again

nice work

Cactus_Mike Thanks man! Spent way too much time on this one haha. I actually found that hood first relatively quickly and went through a bunch of those but realized it couldn’t be the first two clips after a while. Then I remember DwD modulates to D often so I started looking through those and eventually found the first two.

mcgrupp81 Nice choices this week. When I heard the first jam, it immediately reminded me of the 12/1/94 Tweezer right before Trey starts going into that Norwegian Wood tease. Funny enough, I was looking up Reading, PA on a map earlier today as I was trying to calculate the distance between that town and another town I might be moving to in the not too distant future.

Might not be the right forum, but I clicked on the "CA" next to Chula Vista and only California shows from 2008 to present came up. I mean, 4/16/92 through 4/21/92 understand the historical significance of Justin Beiber attending the 2012 Long Beach show, but don't feel that it should lead to their exclusion from any search results on this site or any other Phish site.

Zands I came closer than I have been these past few weeks, I had the second jam pegged as a 3.0 DwD and I knew clip 3 was a Hood. What hurts though is that I looked at 10/29/94 but I didn't bother to listen to it I just thought like "oh weird DwD goes in to TMWSIY that's probably pretty cool"

Well, you live you learn. Great jorb Cactus_Mike!

MiguelSanchez I had a better chance of pulling some ass in this thread than getting that.

sumac22 Heard that first jam many times, but just couldn't place it! Great work @Cactus_Mike!!

A_Buddhist_Prodigy Oh yeah! It was modulation in D that really through me! Had I realized that, this would have been a breeze!! NO IDEA how you guys do it! I was just happy a few weeks ago to know the song (not the date or anything crazy like that! Nice work.

krivraq Disclaimer, I'm in my 40s and stay away from tech if at all possible...

Is there a bot or software that you wizards run to get these??? Modulation "D" change?!? So, of the tens of thousands times (I'm guessing) the band has played in D over their 30+ year span, you guys can pull the exact song(s) out of nowhere?? Maybe you guys got copies of The Book and have locked it away from the masses?

F-ing amazed every week

Here are some blog posts from a few years back that might be enlightening on the modulation front:
part1
part2
part3

I'll add that for those of us that play an instrument, once you know what key different Phish songs and jams are in and once you're tuned into the fact that they modulate all the time when they go Type II, certain patterns emerge (e.g. the I->IV modulation is quite common for them)
